How do you measure happiness?

I was having a conversation with a friend the other day and he mentioned that before going to do an MBA he will first go back and do a degree in mathematics. I started prodding and he mentioned that mathematics was his childhood dream and now was the time he was going to accomplish it. This got me thinking, are we happy? If you are in your twenties like I am maybe you have all these questions that seem not to have answers, the quarter century crisis as I mentioned here. One moment you think you have got it all figured out, and the next moment, the next moment, nothing appears to make sense.

After talking to few people here and there (don’t tell me I never talked to you, I will soon enough ;)) I realized that many of us don’t like what we are doing, where were work and the work itself. We work just to pay bills, there is the general feeling of being over utilized and underpaid. We start wondering whether it is the right career path that we are trudging. If you are scared of love, you also wonder for how long you can keep being scared. At what point will you grow pair and risk being hurt again and again, still mend your broken pieces and dare to trust and love yet again, no walls, no barbed wires. If you have a great idea or there is a major decision you have to make in regard to your well-being you question for how long will you keep testing the waters or second guessing yourself before you dive in, follow your heart. You ask whether dreams do really come true. But as we were discussing with this friend, we found that true happiness can be only attained if you can achieve and live up to your childhood dreams.

So back to you, what are your answers to the questions I began with? Are you living your dream? Are you happy? Have you attained your childhood dreams? If not what are you waiting for? Where does the pursuit of happiness lead you, are you daring to even pursue what makes you truly happy? Be it a person, job, love, anything really just name it or are you scared as many of us are? Thank God its Monday #TGIM

Today I am starting this series, every start of the week I will be posting a list of things I am thankful for. This weekend alot has happened around me and I got to learn things that make you sit reflect and start appreciating life. Well here is what I am thankful for:

1. Life – I am grateful for just being able to see another day, being able to continue with my search of a purpose; a pursuit of happiness.
2. Family – I am happy knowing that all I do should not be with a myopic view it affects those around, my family. They are the ones you turn to when shit hits the fan…
3. Friends – These ones keep my behind grounded, ensure i don’t get big headed by slapping me silly when stupidity creeps into my head. The experiences shared help me become a better man. I hope you feel the same way too if we are friends 🙂
4. Freedom – Being able to walk about without watching over your back, being free is something you need to celebrate, thank God for. Someone close was arrested and those hours he was on the other side of free is not something you want to experience, when you hear a man near tears (am sure they poured when we were gone) you begin taking the freedom you have albeit little very seriously.
5. Dreams – I want more from life, in Marslow’s hierarchy I am somewhere  midway and dreams paint a picture of how actualisation will look like. Dreams make you work harder just to be able to turn them into a beautiful reality. Maybe I dream a lot but when reality starts knocking it will also be alot of reality (excuse my english).
6. Love – I know I do have walls but then there there those people who just do not give up on you, I am grateful for you too.
7. Work – Everyone believes they are paid less than they are worth. We want more for me, work is part of being a son now, for I plan to become a father soon.

That is not all but it tops my list today, I thank God its Monday I can continue in my pursuit of happiness. I Thank God its Monday, I can continue experiencing all of the above. What are you grateful for today? What do you Thank God its Monday for? #TGIM
